Michael Eisner Retires Early
Disney head steps down before time.
The much troubled head of Disney, Michael Eisner, has announced his retirement - albeit two years in advance. The chief executive plans to retire in September 2006 after 'a fantastic Disney ride for the past twenty years' and has given no indication as to whether his much publicised troubles with Miramax or fellow board members came into the decision. Eisner has said that he has given two years notice so that the company can have a healthy transition when it replaces him.
It will come as good news to Roy Disney and Stanley Gold who have been campaigning to get rid of him, although they probably would have preferred if he retired now instead. Eisner was in charge of the company throughout the Fahrenheit 9/11 debacle when Disney decided not to release the documentary and pass it onto a different distributor instead because of fears of how it could affect its corporate image. The company has also suffered with some box offices failures recently, most notably The Alamo, and the fact that their arrangement with Pixar is coming to an end.
